Week 11 Story: Native American Marriage Tales

 Native American Marriage Tales

Bibliography: Native American Marriage Tales by Stith Thompson marriage-dog-husband.html

There was a women who owned a cat. This cat was her best friend they were together all day. During the night the cat would turn into a human and come into her bed to keep her company. One day the girl woke up and realized she was pregnant. The family knew it was from the cat and they were ashamed at the situation. So they killed the cat and left the girl to fend for herself. They did this because they thought she would not make it on her own. But the girl learned many things and survived on her own. She had the kittens and kept them fed. There were three boys and two girls. She wanted them to be human so that they could help her out so she burned the blanket that had the cats on it and they were forever human. Once they got old enough the mother taught the boys to hunt. So the boys would go out and get animals for them to eat. The girls were taught to go out and collect berries. So every day they would go out and collect things for the family to eat. The mother also taught them how to sew so the boys would get animals and sew blankets and things from the fur of the animals. They had a great life. They always had enough food, they had a great house, and they had all the supplies they needed to keep warm. One day the girl's parents came to see if she was still alive. And they saw how great they were doing and all they had so they decided to move back and worship the family. So the family became the chiefs and leaders to the village.

Here is a picture to represent the kittens from the story.

Authors note: The story is very similar to the original except the animal that got the women pregnant was a dog. Also the children were misbehaving so that was why the mother made them turn into a humans for good. Other than those tings the story pretty much remains along the same lines.

  1. Hi Sophie!

This was a very interesting story. I had never heard this before but I think you did a great job at writing it. I have always wondered what would happen to these offspring in the real world. It is hard to tell what they would turn out to be. But, you explained it very well! They were taught to survive whether it be through hunting or gathering.

  2. Hi Sophie!

I really enjoyed your story! It was very interesting, and it was cool how you added your own twist to the story, while still keeping the a lot of the original details. Great job!

  3. Hi Sophie,
This was such an interesting story and I thought you did well at changing it. I have never heard of animals changing to humans and having offspring with original humans so that was something new to learn. One thing I wonder is how the woman felt after they killed the cat that gave her children. That could be an area to explore or expand on in terms of emotion in the story.

  4. Sophie-
What a strange way for a story start, a human getting impregnated by a cat! I haven't read the original version but I think the way you summarized it was good! I didn't feel like I was missing any details or that you skipped over a part. I like how the mom taught the kids how to hunt and gather to provide for the family. When you have a whole litter you have to do something!

  5. Hi Sophie!

Aw, it's so sad that the cat was killed by her family. That sounds so heartless. I didn't read the original story so reading this story was definitely a wild ride for me. I think you did a good job though of sticking to the original plot. I would love to see some dialogue in this story as well as it would really add to the plot. Good job!
