Introduction to Dancer, Sophie!

Hello! My name is Sophie Martin. I am from Orange County, California. I was born and raised there so I know the area very well. Although my family has moved a few times we have generally live in the same part of Orange County. I am very close to my family. I have two older sisters who are amazing. My middle sister does behavioral therapy with children who are on the spectrum and she loves it very much. My oldest sister is an amazing chef and now is working to get her masters in teaching. She also just got married this past summer. She is the first out of all of us to get married so it was very special. I also gained my first brother from this so it was an amazing experience altogether.

My major is public relations with a minor in communication. I absolutely love learning more in this topic. I always knew I wanted to do something social but taking classes in public relations definitely makes me like it even more. I know this major is broad so there are many different paths I can take with it, which I like very much. But I do hope to do something within the social media field. I am very interested in working with sports so I think managing social media for a sports team would be a big interest of mine.

One of my biggest passions is dancing. I have been dancing since I was 3 years old and I have been dancing competitively since I was 6! I absolutely love dancing and do not know where I would be without it. I hope to further my dancing career in trying out for some sort of professional dancing team. I also would be interested in coaching younger girls to help further their love and passion for dance. Some other passions of mine include reading and working out.

Thank you for reading my introduction! I hope this helps you to learn a little bit more about me.

This is a photo taken of myself during a high school dance.

  1. Hi, Sophie!
It is exciting to hear that you have an amazing chef sister. I also indulge in cooking, and I love to cook and share foods with my friends. Besides, so glad to hear that you fall in love with dance. I think it's cool for a dancer to do whatever kind of dance. It is also impressed that you could keep your passion in dance.

  2. Hey Sophie!
Dancing is a really cool passion; I bet it's a great way to relieve stress and get some exercise. I haven’t been to California yet, but I hear that Orange County is beautiful (super jealous that you got to grow up there). Your sisters’ occupations and your future occupation all sound really worthwhile and interesting. I wish you the best of luck in achieving your goals!

  4. Oh, public relations is such a great major for this class, Sophie! Storytelling is absolutely part of what public relations is about, and maybe you can find some storytelling styles and strategies in this class that will cross over into your major. And of course dancing is huge part of the folklore tradition... and with YouTube, there are all kinds of folk dances you can watch just like folktales that you can read in books online. If you are interested in some of the folklore and mythology ABOUT dancing, that might be something fun to work on for a project in this class, plus there are some famous fairy tales about dancers, The Shoes That Were Danced to Pieces - link... and of course all the famous ballets, many of which have folklore and mythology as their source stories, turned into dances: Wikipedia ballet link. Anyway, it looks like there are all kinds of possible connections between your interests and this class, so I hope you will have a good time with it! :-)

  5. Hey Sophie! That’s awesome that you’re from California. I have always wanted to go to California, but Colorado is the furthest West that I’ve gone. That’s really neat that you dance competitively and are wanting to help teach kids how to dance. I bet that’s a lot of fun and a lot of good exercise! It was very nice to meet you. Good luck this semester!

  6. Hi Sophie, I have an aunt that lives in Orange County. I visited her last summer. I loved the weather there a lot more compared to Oklahoma's 100 degree weather. I was really sad when summer ended and I had to go back to Oklahoma. I've lived in Oklahoma my whole life so I kind of want a change and live somewhere else in the future. Also, it's so cool that you're a dancer. I always love watching dancing shows. I don't know how to dance at all so I'm always in complete awe and amazement when I see talented dancers!

  7. Hi Sophie!

I have to ask, what's it like to have all sisters? Is it like living the dream? I ask because I have all brothers and have wanted a sister my whole life! It's also so awesome that you are a dancer. I love to dance, but I am terrible at it so I definitely give you props for being able to.

    Have an awesome day!

  8. Hi Sophia,

What kind of sports would you like to work with their social media? Is there one in particular? That is so cool that you dance. I love to dance as well but not competitively. That is so cool that you are thinking about being in a professional dance team and want to coach young girls. Was it fun to compete? I hope this semester is your best one yet!

  9. Hi Sophie, nice to meet you!!! I love meeting other dancers - I did ballet for seven years growing up, then stopped when it became difficult schedule wise with school activities. But I ended up taking ballet I at OU last semester for fun and loved it!! I hope you are still able to continue dancing, and I'm glad you find joy in it!

  10. Hey Sophie, what type of dance do you primarily do? I know that there's different types that people get into as my little sister danced for a short while. But I'm curious if there's a certain type of style that you focus on, or believe fits you the best? Also, I wish you the best in your future endeavors! Honestly, working for a type of social media outlet sounds like a dream, even though I know that there's a lot that definitely has to go into managing it. Still, I hope you get to do sports social media if that's what you like; it sounds fun and is something different!

  11. Hi Sophie,
I too am from California, my entire family is from Southern California, but I grew up near Sacramento. It is really cool to see how passionate you are about dancing. Your passion for sports is really cool as well, I am on the baseball team here at OU. Look forward to reading some of your work this semester. Hope everything is well for you during this crazy year.

  12. Hi Sophie,

That's really cool you're from California! I don't know much about it but I have traveled to Socal once- LA, malibu, hollywood, and it was definitely an adjustment. I come from a smaller town in oklahoma so i'll always be an okie at heart with an appreciation for the middle of nowhere. Your potential career choice is very interesting- i dont know many people that choose to go that route but it's really cool and i bet you'll have success considering it's so niche. I wish you the best of luck and have a good rest of the semester!

  13. Hi Sophie!

I'm a public relations major too! What made you interested in public relations? I'm always curious to know what others' inspiration was when choosing their major. That's awesome that you found a passion with dancing. While it's not dancing, I did competitive junior high and high school singing that I absolutely loved, so I can totally relate in falling in love with the arts. It's cool that we're both the youngest! I am the youngest of four boys, so I can totally relate to being the youngest of three girls. I hope the rest of your semester goes well!

  14. Hi Sophie!

I love the communications classes and the college itself. If I was not doing medical, I would have loved to discover more about that college! I think it is super cool that you love dance. Being passionate about something makes life so much more fun. I was born with two left feet but I still love to get up and dance! Now, if I was asked to do technical dance moves, I would be in trouble.

  15. Hi Sophie!
I am so glad that you love communications! I had to take one comm class and it terrified me so props to you! Is there a specific sport that you would want to work with if you were to be a social media manager? Also I love to hear that you have a passion and have been able to keep up with that passion through your life! I hope you are having a great semester so far!

  16. Hi Sophie, It's nice to meet you. I only have one older sister and I loved when she got married because my brother in law is amazing. I now have two older sister in law's too from my husband. My sister is the one who has done the communication side of things though and works in social media as well. It's a very competitive field. I think it's great you have a plan for what you want to do and are working through it. Good Luck!

  17. Hi Sophie! My older sister got married in March and she was also the first one so it was really special! I already had 2 brothers, and now I have 3(eyeroll). But they keep things interesting! I was a competitive dancer for 10 years so I understand your desire to continue that. I did my best to continue dance my first few years of college but eventually my classes got harder and I didn't have the time I wish I had. I was dance director for U-sing and Scandals for my house and it was so much being able to tap back into those roots. I hope you have a great rest of the semester!!

  18. Hi Sophie! Dancing is something I have always thought was beautiful but was sadly not gifted in myself. My cousin dances and he is absolutely amazing at it! He got to be on the youth USA dance team and travel the world to compete so I understand the work that goes into it. I'm not sure if you're in a greek house or not but if you are you should totally do U-sing or Scandals! It was great getting to read about you Sophie!

  19. Hi, Sophie. Woo! It's always nice to "meet" another Gaylord student. I'm a CMP major so I don't know much about PR, but maybe I've seen you in the halls. I think it's awesome that you have such a passion for dance. I do hope you could one day be a coach and pass that on. My little sister was a dancer growing up and I don't know who she'd be without it.

  20. Hi Sophie!
It's nice to meet you. I don't really know much about PR as I am at Zarrow in Social Work but it sounds like you have really found your passion! How exciting to still be dancing after all these years. Like several people I know I started dancing when I was very young, but stopped by the time I was in high school. It was enjoyable but not something long term for me. Nice meeting you!
